Singing River Healthplex announced their first King, Ronnie Crocker, and Queen, Jennifer Gallaspy, to kick-off a week of activities in honor of their one year anniversary.  Ronnie Crocker is actually one of our first members to join. In November 2011, Ronnie had to have a triple bypass surgery. After his recovery period he was able to phase back into his regular exercise routine with the assistance of Monica Baehr, SRH Clinical coordinator.  The queen, Jennifer Gallaspy, joined Healthplex back in May of 2011. She is a workhorse in our gym. With the assistance of the Kids Klubhouse, Jennifer is able to come in the evenings and participate in three of the Group X classes: ABS, Spinning and Zumba. Both the King and Queen combined beautifully demonstrate the ideology behind Healthplex and will be spotlighted in the WGUD television segments scheduled for Wednesday. The voting process was phenomenal here. At the event table (located outside the Membership Services Director), members would come up two to three times a day and vote for their King and Queen.  There were approximately 300 ballots casted for King and Queen. Other activities scheduled for Singing River Healthplex’s Anniversary week are:  General Manager Powerplex class, Ballroom Dancing, Stress Management lecture, Blood Pressure check, Cancer Prevention through a Healthy Diet lecture, Family Fitness Day and a Dive – in movie (Cars 2).

The Center for Fitness and Health recently hosted a healthy cooking demonstration.  The demonstration was conducted by Esther Hindmarsh, the RD from Mon Valley Hospital.  The event attracted over 100 members and Esther cooked over 75 omelets for the group.  The Center hosts monthly screenings, lectures or demonstrations from its participating hospital; a wonderful way to incorporate hospital programming in our services and help the Center create differentiation from its competitors.

»The Fairmont General HealthPlex, located in Fairmont, WV, will launch a new Cancer Wellness Program September 15th.  The program is being funded by a $10,000 grant that the Fairmont General Hospital (FGH) received from the Bowers Trust of Marion County. The Cancer Program will focus on exercise, stress management, and nutrition. It's an eight week program that meets two times per week on Mondays and Thursday at 10 a.m. in the morning”, said Bob Stedman, General Manager at the Healthplex Fitness Center.

Each participant will be screened prior to starting the program to find out their fitness level and their overall capabilities.  “When they can maintain that level of activity, even if it's just a minimal level of activity every day, it gets you moving and gets your blood flowing and  makes you feel better in general," said Tricia Julian, Program Coordinator for Oncology Services at FGH. Julian also said the program won't be a financial burden to the cancer patients who participate in it, thanks to the grant money. Cancer patients incur a lot of expenses during their treatment and FGH and the HealthPlex Fitness Center take pride in our ability to offer this new program free of charge.

This program is the only of its kind in the state, and is an excellent example of what can be developed to promote medical integration between the hospital and a medical fitness center and bring unique services like this to patients.   Click on this link for story covered by the local NBC TV affiliate.   http://wboy.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=106213
